Here we take a look at the best hammock tarps on the market to allow you to stay dry and comfortable in the great outdoors.

Everest Hammock Rain Fly – Waterproof Outdoor Tarp

View on Amazon

A hammock tarp needs to be both durable and lightweight to give you everything that you need. It’s a delicate balance between strength and weight but one that Everest has been able to get just right here.

The material is made from durable nylon and also has added ripstop qualities. That helps to keep the weight down but also protects against ripping. Along with the reinforced weaker areas, it all adds up to a tarp which should be able to stand the test of time.

The tarp is able to give you a coverage area of 85 square feet which should be able to keep you dry even when the rain is pouring heavily. It can catch in high winds which will put a lot of stress on the weaker areas and can lead to some ripping.

The reflective guy lines that it features are strong and will keep the tarp anchored. They also help to form a very safe tarp solution as they’ll prevent you from tripping over the lines. Tensioning those lines is also very easy for a quick set-up.

A compact stuff sack is available and that will allow you to easily take the tarp on your journey. At just 26 ounces it should be easy enough for almost everyone to carry. It’s an impressive tarp and you get two different color options to choose from.

PROS:
  • Easy to set up and tension
  • High level of safety
  • Reinforced durability
  • Compact and portable carry bag

CONS:
  • Can catch the wind

Foxelli Rain Tarp – Lightweight, Portable, Waterproof

View on Amazon

If you’re looking for the lightest tarp out there then this would be a great option for you. At just 18.2oz it is extremely lightweight and will allow you to easily carry it on a long backpacking adventure along with a lightweight hammock.

The tarp is diamond-shaped which is going to be able to give you a good amount of coverage. As well as protecting you from the rain falling down onto it, the tarp is also going to block any harmful UV rays and even be resistant to snowfall.

Durability is another area where this tarp ranks very highly. It is made from ripstop polyester which will protect against abrasions and ripped. As well as the material, the tarp is also double stitched to strengthen points which might otherwise be weak.

One impressive aspect of this tarp is how versatile it is. Once you’ve finished using it to protect your hammock, you can easily use it at home as a bike cover, BBQ cover or anything else that you can think of to get the most out of your money.

It isn’t very effective at blocking the light from the sun but most people won’t be bothered by that. The tarp is very easy to use which includes being able to be easily adjusted. For such a low weight it’s a high-quality tarp which will stand the test of time.

PROS:
  • Versatile tarp
  • Great waterproofing

  • Easy to tension

CONS:
  • Doesn’t block sunlight

Wise Owl Outfitters has been able to make a hammock tarp which weighs slightly more at 26 ounces. That still makes it easy enough to carry for most people. It also packs up into a compact size which also helps to improve its portability.

It’s a hammock tarp which might not hold up in the stormiest of conditions but it will be able to take a lot of punishment. It’s made from ripstop nylon which gives it the strength it needs to pass the test of time and give you memorable adventures.

A lot cheaper tarps can rip at the connection points and the seams but with this being reinforced, you’re not going to have those issues. It is made from strong materials and that includes the high-quality stakes that you are given with it.

Set-up is very easy and you’re going to be able to have it up in no time at all. That’s especially important when you’re in inclement weather. The guy lines are easy to tighten to leave you with a taught tarp which will be able to easily deflect the rain.

Sanctuary SilTarp – Ultralight and Waterproof Ripstop Silnylon Rain Shelter Tarp

View on Amazon

The tarps that we have looked at so far don’t have many options when it comes to size. Here we have three size options available to suit your needs while also being able to get the tarp in either a tapered, flat or hex cut.

Several attachment loops all across the tarp help to make it very easy to set-up. You’ll be able to get it very tight to prevent any puddles of rain forming on the tarp. One problem does come from not the tarp itself but the stakes and guy lines.

They aren’t the highest quality and some users have reported that they have broken after continual use. It just means you have to be a little more careful when using the tarp. The material itself is very strong with it being made from ripstop nylon.

The weaker areas of the tarp are also reinforced to prevent ripping. The fabric is still able to remain lightweight and flexible. That will make it a great option for longer backpacking or hiking trips where weight becomes a big issue.

The tarp also comes with a compact stuff sack which will let you easily put the tarp away once you’re done. Whether you want to use it for hammocks or regular camping, it’s a tarp which will perform well. If you’re in more demanding environments then it might be worth looking at getting stronger stakes.

PROS:
  • Great waterproofing
  • Compact stuff sack
  • High versatility
  • Several attachment loops

CONS:
  • Lower quality accessories

View on Amazon

If you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to limit themselves to just one color then this is the tarp for you. There are several color options available which are going to allow you to get something which suits your style and personality.

Despite being made from thick ripstop nylon, the hammock tarp is able to remain lightweight at just 22 ounces. That will make it very easy to carry on even longer adventures. It can be a little bulky depending on the amount of space that you have.

An advantage of that thicker material is that this is a tarp which will hold up extremely well in difficult conditions. For those who don’t just go camping when the sun is shining, this is going to be the best hammock tarp for you.

There are six points to connect the tarp and that helps to make it very easy to set-up and also to take down. If you are in bad weather, this means that you won’t spend a frustratingly long time trying to put it up.

It has been specifically made for hammocks and works perfectly in that scenario, but it also can be used for many different purposes. This is a very impressive hammock tarp and if you can deal with the slightly added bulk, you will have immense protection.

Chill Gorilla 10×10 Hammock Rain Fly Camping Tarp

View on Amazon

Chill Gorilla is another company who has decided to add a range of colors to their tarps. With five options available you’re going to be able to find something which suits you and will look great when it’s up over your hammock.

The waterproof ripstop nylon is going to be able to give you plenty of protection and allow you to get a sound night of sleep in your hammock. With the 2 centerlines and the 9 tie-downs, you’re going to be able to have it securely fitted.

That will also be helped by the high-quality aluminum stakes that it has. Your tarp will be firmly kept to the ground even in the harshest of conditions. The material will also cope with those stresses and strains with its reinforced corners.

All of that comes in a stuff sack which is very easy to carry and to use. Along with the overall design, it means that you can get the tarp set up and also pack it away in no time at all. The usability is very high with minimal frustrations.

The material doesn’t have the highest level of waterproofing protection and if you leave any flat areas then there is a chance that they could be exposed. If you put your tarp up tightly then you shouldn’t have any problems with it.

PROS:
  • Sturdy fabric
  • Great performance
  • High-quality materials

Buyers Guide

Size

Most of these hammock tarps come in a fairly standard size as it will give you enough coverage for your hammock. If you wanted to have a little more coverage then there are plenty of larger tarps that are going to be able to use.

While having a lot of coverage sounds like a great idea, people who use a hammock generally want their equipment to have the lowest weight possible. More material means more weight and you have to bear this in mind if you want more than the standard size.

Shape

The shape of you hammock tarp is going to have a significant impact on how it performs:

Rectangular/Square – This is a standard shape with the ridge-line directly above the hammock. This offers you great weather protection but it has a low level of air ventilation.

Diamond – If you want the very minimal amount of weight then a diamond is a great option. It doesn’t offer the ultimate in protection but will still keep you covered. It is also generally the easiest to put up and take down.

Hexagonal – These will be very similar in shape to the rectangular models but the corners are instead removed. This not only cuts weight and bulk but it also means that more air can flow through the tent. This is perhaps the best solution but also the most expensive.

Material

There are a few different materials that can be used with hammock tarps. By far the most common is nylon as this is lightweight and durable. It can be combined with ripstop to increase its durability and ensure that these tarps last for a long time.

Polyester is a similar material which can also be made extremely strong while also being lightweight. Polyethylene will give you better protection but this is a traditional tarp material which is heavier and therefore harder to carry.

Weight

The importance of weight is going to depend on a few different factors. If you’re not going to be traveling far then having some extra protection and weight won’t be an issue. You’ll be able to carry it the short distance without any frustrations.

If you are going to be backpacking or hiking then weight becomes a lot more important. There is usually a balance here as to get durability, coverage, and quality you generally need to add weight. You need to strike the right balance for you.

Durability

As we mentioned previously, there can be a conflict of interest with durability. Usually, the more durable something is, the more it weighs. The products that we have looked at here strike a good balance between making a strong tarp which keeping a low weight.

There are a few features which can improve durability. The attachment points can be weak areas and you want them to be reinforced. Also having double-stitched seams will prevent ripping. Finally, you need strong stakes that aren’t going to snap.

Weather resistance

The whole point of these tarps is to be able to protect you from the weather and primarily the rain. They all have a waterproof coating on them which will be able to repel water and ensure that it will run off the sides and away from you.

Some of them aren’t fully waterproof and therefore it’s important to make sure that the tarp is taught so that any water can’t settle. If you are in windier conditions then using a tarp with curved sides will better allow the air to pass through.

Extra Features

Stuff sack – A stuff sack is vital to be able to easily pack away your tarp and also carry it. Most companies will include this as an accessory in order to make your life easier.

Guy lines – The guy lines that you use need to be very strong and able to cope with the high pressure they’ll be under. Having reflective tape on them is also a great additional safety feature.

Stakes – Some great tarps can come with low-quality stakes and that can be a huge disappointment. High-quality aluminum stakes are a great idea as they are much less likely to break.

Colors – A lot of these tarps come in just one color which will be absolutely fine for most people. For those looking for more options, there are a few companies who provide a nice range of colors.

Final thoughts

Getting the best hammock tarp for you is going to depend on a number of key features. Which is more important, weight or durability? Are you looking to spend a little more or do you want a budget option? These are the types of questions you want to ask yourself.

Hopefully, our buying guide has been able to answer all of those questions for you. All that’s left for you to do is pick your favorite tarp, grab your hammock and enjoy your next adventure knowing that you’re going to be kept dry and protected from the elements.

Usually, the size of the hammock tarp is standardized. But you need to be sure that your tarp covers your hammock wholly. Don’t look for a too large tarp, ’cause it can be just extra weight while camping.
